Sean Dougherty Obituary, Utica, NY, Lieutenant Sean Dougherty Tragically Passed Away – (1979 – 2024) Death Notice

Death: Sean Dougherty Obituary – It is with deep regret that we must inform you of the untimely demise of Lieutenant Sean Dougherty. Following twenty years of devoted service with the Utica Police Department, Lieutenant Dougherty recently departed from his position. On Tuesday, March 19, 2024, Lt. Sean Michael Dougherty, Ret. United States Police Department, passed suddenly unexpectedly in the comfort of his own home. He was 44 years old. Duffy Dougherty and Rose Mary (Palmisano) Dougherty welcomed their son Sean into the world on July 4, 1979, in the city of Utica.

Sean began his career with the Utica Police Department in the Patrol Division, where he had the opportunity to serve in a variety of capacities, including as an officer, a Sergeant, and a Lieutenant initially. Additionally, he was assigned to our Professional Standards Unit, where his unwavering efforts guaranteed that all of our policies, procedures, and laws were adhered to in order to maintain the level of professionalism that is commonly associated with our organization. Because Sean was so committed to his work, many of the practices that are in place now are a direct result of the responsibilities that he fulfilled.

Prior to his retirement, Lieutenant Dougherty was most recently given the responsibility of serving as the Director of the Mohawk Valley Crime Analysis Center. A significant role in the day-to-day operations of not just the Utica Police Department but also of three counties in the surrounding area is played by the center. Lt. Dougherty was in charge of overseeing the daily operations of the center and making certain that any requests from the agency were processed in a timely and accurate manner. The sworn members of our staff, as well as the civilian personnel working within the Center, looked up to him as a leader.

Although Sean was committed to his work, he also showed the same level of commitment to his family and friends. Because of his friendly and low-key demeanor, he won the hearts of everyone. With a grin and a chuckle, he was almost always prepared to provide a helping hand. The loss of him will be felt deeply by everyone who knew him and collaborated with him. We would like to express our deepest condolences to Sean’s family and state that we will be there to support them in any way we can in order to remember Sean’s life and service. His loss is also felt by his aunts and uncles, Cynthia and the late Jeff Cohen, Chuck and Palma Dougherty, Cheryl Ewing, Chet and Debbie Dougherty, David Simbari and his children, Stephanie, and Stephen, Ann and Tom Wolanski and their children Sara, Leah, and Michelle, Jeff Almstead and his late wife Rebecca.

Cindy Morgan and her late husband Dave, Richard and Maria Salamida, Mark Salamida, and Roger Perta; godmother, Ann Marie Corleto, her husband Dan, and their children, Dan, Jr., Mia, and Michael; his cousins, Terry, Judi, Jesse, Nina, Erin; Meghan, Chuck, Jr.; Matthew, and Kimberly; his niece and four nephews of the Vella family who affectionately called him “Uncle Pooh.” Sean developed a large number of meaningful connections over the course of his life, with Rainer Kohlbrenner being a particular highlight. Rainer was like a brother to Sean.

Family and friends are cordially invited to join Sean’s Mass of Christian Burial and Celebration of Life, which will begin on Wednesday, March 27, 2024 at three o’clock in the afternoon at Mary, Mother of Our Savior Parish, Lourdes Campus, located at 2222 Genesee Street. In order to pay tribute to their fellow officer, members of the Utica Police Department will demonstrate their presence. You are welcome to make memorial contributions in Sean’s honor to a trust fund that the family is creating for the purpose of providing for his daughter Alexa’s future education; envelopes will be available at the service service. Calvary Cemetery shall be the location of the interment, regardless of when it is most convenient for the family.
